An omen or a coincidence? This question is haunting Irene Rios, a bride-to-be whose wedding plans for this weekend have been blown away by Hurricane Irene.
"What are the odds that a hurricane with my name is now an uninvited guest at my wedding" says Irene Rios, "Our family, friends, and coworkers have been commenting for the past few days on the odd coincidence of the storm's moniker."
The wedding was scheduled for Sunday on the beach at Savin Rock in West Haven, Connecticut. The nearly-weds have been planning their wedding over a year, Rios said, "it was all set to go — the food, the venue, and the 120 wedding guests attending the special event."
Unbeknownst to Irene Rios and her fiance David Knauf, the very storm that shares the same name as this bride, Hurricane Irene, was scheduled to make landfall in Connecticut on the very day the couples wedding was supposed to take place, and with all that Hurricane Irene has claimed in the storms path of destruction, we can now include Irene's wedding to the list.
“It’s sort of got us on the edge of our seats,” Knauf said, "we've been watching the weather all day long hoping that the path would change." But of course it hasn't, and New England is unavoidably going to experience the wrath of Hurricane Irene in the storms final stages before changing to a tropical storm late Sunday night as it approaches the northern New England states.
For now, the nearly-weds plans are to plan their wedding indoors, but after Connecticut declared a state of emergency on Friday, it's unknown whether or not a mandatory evacuation will be issued, and if there is, their wedding venue, even indoors on the beach, will be included in the evacuated areas.
What are the odds of Hurricane Irene sharing the same name as a bride, and being the cause of this wedding disaster? "If we could get a Vegas view of this, the odds of this happening are impossible I would think," David Knauf said. But with Hurricane Irene having her eye set on the couple's wedding venue, certainly this unpredictable storm has shown this couple that anything is possible.
