CLAIRTON, PA — A western Pennsylvania man is facing charges after a wedding night crash on Sunday that left his new bride hospitalized.
Clairton police say 56-year-old Billy Leroy Peroney faces charges including driving under the influence and reckless endangerment for Sunday night's crash. Authorities say the groom, Billy Leroy Peroney and his bride, Kelly Peroney, were driving home from their wedding reception when Billy Peroney lost control of his car while passing another vehicle and struck a utility pole before crashing into a house.
Nearby neighbors heard the crash and called the police. "All we heard was a real loud bang because we were all in bed sleeping. And it was a real loud bang because it woke everybody up in the house," said neighbor William Henderson.
Clairton Police said the groom, Billy Leroy Peroney admitted to drinking that night during his wedding reception. Officers on-scene said Peroney smelled of alcohol and failed a field sobriety test. The groom was not injured, but he was booked in the Clairton Police Department and now faces DUI charges.
Peroney's bride, however, was not so fortunate. 40-year-old Kelly Matthews Peroney, was trapped in the car and had to be cut free by the Clairton Fire Department with the jaws-of-life and was then airlifted to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital. Kelly Peroney's injuries were not known, but police say the bride is expected to make a full recovery.
